Ratish Nanda

Namaste and you're listening to another episode of We the Fellows, where we're talking to the various eisenhower fellows finding out about their countries and their thoughts and opinions on global issues.

Ratish is one of India’s leading conservation architects. As Program Manager for the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Ratish oversees a wide variety of restoration and conservation projects in India and Afghanistan. He has also been responsible for the conservation of more than 50 buildings dating from the 11th century for the Delhi Chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). He is best known for his exhaustive inventory of 1,200 buildings and historical sites, Delhi, The Built Heritage, published in 2000.

When I read that Ratish Nanda would be coming to the US for the program from India, I have to admit, I was somewhat scared. How important would it be for us to get along? It's India and Pakistan for Goodness sakes! How is this supposed to work?! My mind went off in a number of skewed directions but I felt like such a goof when he and his wife came to say hello to me as I was frantically typing away at some document during the first week of the fellowship. It was as if we had known each other for a long time.

I honestly don't care what the media says - Ratish has become a wonderful friend and he has done well to preserve his heart of gold.

Stay tuned for more podcasts and keep checking the eisenhowerfellowships.org website for more details about the various programs and news about all of us. Until the next podcast, this is Rabia Garib, logging off.

Rizwana Hasan

Welcome to another episode of We the Fellows, and today I get to introduce you to a co-fellow that has already influenced a great deal of change in her environment. Yes. You guessed it. I'm talking about Syeda Rizwana Hasaan who is an environmental lawyer from Bangladesh.

Rizwana oversees the planning and administration of the seven offices and 64 employees that make up the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association, while simultaneously carrying her own case load. She has filed and advocated for the rights and interests of the landless, fishermen, farmers, and other affected communities in cases involving encroachment on public property; air, water, and soil pollution; compensation for land expropriation and other disruptive development initiatives.

Rizwana is an extremely strong woman leading an important cause in a male-dominated society, and what's most important is the fact that she is making a huge difference.

Rafael Bundoc

This is indeed We the Fellows and I am Rabia Garib, continuing to bring out some of the voices of the Eisenhower Fellows of the Multi Nation Program - a 2-month program that has taken 24 of us on a remarkable journey across the US.

Rafael Bundoc from the Philippines is one of the most interesting people I have ever come across. Rafael is a spine surgeon and is one of those people who knows a lot, about everything.

My first interaction with Rafael took place when Fatin from Saudi Arabia, Rafael and myself travelled to Radnor to visit Dr Theodore Friend, during the first week of the fellowship. That's where I learned about Rafael's dedication and passion for the work that he does. In addition to being a surgeon, Rafael has done tremendous work to give back to his community - His pioneering efforts led him to establish the first and only biomechanical laboratory in the Philippines. Complementing his multiple roles within the academic medical arena, Rafael served for six years on the board of the Philippine Association for the Reintegration of Disabled in Society, where he organized seminars for local prosthetic and orthotics technicians.

This was a brief chat we had at the airport terminal in Phoenix Arizona before Rafael ran to his terminal to catch his flight.

I enjoy learning from Rafael - learning from his rich experience, wisdom and wonderful character. It can't be a coincidence that someone so strong is such a reputable orthopedic spine surgeon and gives BACK to support his community and people.

I've had a wonderful time meeting all of my co-fellows but my first meeting with Emine Kaya of the Netherlands, stands out. The second morning of the fellowship, I stumbled downstairs for breakfast when I saw someone madly waving in my direction. Never having seen this person before, I waved back and sat down to have a conversation with Emine and it was like we were simply picking up a conversation we had started earlier, which obviously wasn't the case.

Over the next few weeks, I've had some interesting discussions with Emine and had the opportunity to learn so much about what she does.

You can feel the energy that Emine emits in a room and you will certainly know that she wears her heart out on her sleeve. Someone with your understanding of the fundamental issues, is what we need to resolve the many underlying problems with basic human rights in so many parts of the world. We certainly wish you the best in the work that you are doing, Emine.

Marcelo Knobel

Hola and welcome to another episode of We The Fellows. This is Rabia Garib and I'm still talking to the Eisenhower Fellows of the Multi Nation Program, finding out what all they hope to achieve throughout their 2-month program that takes them across the United States.

Today I get the opportunity to have you listen to my friend Marcelo who is the fellow from Brazil. Dr. Marcelo Knobel is an associate professor of physics, executive director of a science museum, and until recently head of the Center for the Development of Creativity at UNICAMP, the Universidade Estadual de Campinas. He also created and coordinates the interactive exhibit NanoAventura, which aims to stimulate curiosity in the sciences among children and has been viewed by students all over Brazil.

Marcelo has already done so much for his people back home and I am thrilled to hear about his plans to do even more when he returns. And as all of us wish Marcelo good luck (despite the fact that we are all so jealous that he was able to spend time on an OFFICIAL trip to Epcot Center!), stay tuned for more podcasts. Until then, this is Rabia Garib, logging off!

<itunes:summary> Hola and welcome to another episode of We The Fellows.

Until then, this is Rabia Garib, logging off!</itunes:summary>
